The Volcano Art Center sprang from the concept that there are certain places on earth where life force, spiritual presence and physical reality come together to create a powerful attraction for artists. The Kilauea Volcano region is clearly one of these places. Founded in 1974, the Volcano Art Center is dedicated to working closely with Hawaii Volcanoes National Park to further the understanding between art, man and earth by interpreting the environment through the eyes of artists. The gallery is located in the historic 1877 Volcano House. This building, totally crafted by hand using the adz, broadax and chisels, was the first Western style building at Kilauea. Its handcrafted nature echoes the artwork within. A nearby hula platform that overlooks Halema'uma'u crater, is the site of hula kahiko performances that link art, man and earth together in ways that are both ancient and timeless. The Art Center's new 7-acre campus, right outside the Park entrance, contains superb educational facilities in an inspiring natural setting.
