Adult Docent Programme
Docent (do’s’nt;) n. [Latin: docens, prp. Of docere, to teach]
1. A tour guide and lecturer at a museum.
Visual literacy is based on the idea that visual images can be read empirically, theoretically and practically in order to produce meaning. As subject and object meanings continue to evolve through technology and globalization, the ability to comprehend the visual world in which we live is also being redefined. It is as if we must re-learn how to slow down and observe the subtleties that create beauty and/paradox. As a docent you have been given the wonderful task of deepening the visual perception of those visiting the National Galley through the current exhibition and permanent collection. These exhibitions in conjunction with our educational programming - a critical component of which is the docent-led tours - allow visitors an opportunity to slow down their consumption of visual imagery.
The process of guiding visitors through the museum as well as presenting collections and exhibitions is an art. An artist created each work on display and as docents we are the vocal artists who allow the particular work on display to become life to the observer. We believe that you, the docent have come to this opportunity already filled with a rich wealth of experience and knowledge that will aid you in encouraging people of all ages to explore and discover through their interaction with art. The ideas listed in this manual will serve as tools to add to your storehouse of knowledge. As docents we should feel a certain sense of ownership for this institution as we realize that each one of us adds vibrancy to the workings of the life of the National Gallery.
