Jill Amos Raine is one of Bermuda’s best-known watercolour artists who can often be found signing her work at “Bermuda Memories”, her studio in King’s Square, St. George’s. Born in England, she came to Bermuda as a child in the 1950s and worked as a teacher in Bermuda, Spain and the Canadian Arctic before settling down to pursue a serious interest in art. Entirely self-taught, she became a professional enamellist. It was not until 1983 after attending a workshop by American artist Carl Schmulz that she took up watercolour painting. Since then more than 60 lithographs and countless commissions have made her a very successful and collectable artist. Her work has been presented to many dignitaries, including Margaret Thatcher, Princess Margaret and Princess Anne. Driven by “a desire to capture the brilliance and clarity of Bermuda’s colours”, Jill shares her talent and enthusiasm through ‘on location’ workshops and in recent years she has added photography to her artistic repertoire.
