Peter Lapsley is currently a 2008 MFA candidate at Parsons the New School for Design. He received his Bachelor’s degree from St. Francis Xavier University, Nova Scotia in 1998.  From 2001 to 2006 he worked as the Executive Director of the Bermuda Society of Arts. Peter is a sculptor and works with a variety of mediums including, metal, plaster, resin, fabrics and found objects. In February of 2007, during the first year of his MFA programme at Parsons, NY, he was one of 11 students selected for a group exhibition at the Heidi Cho Gallery in Chelsea, NY. He has been the recipient of several grants and scholarships, including the 2007 Chaim Gross sculpture award and a nomination for the 2007/2008 Dedalus Foundation Fellowship Grant. Presently, he is a teaching assistant for sophomore sculpture in the Parsons undergraduate programme while working towards his Graduate-thesis exhibition.

 


Artist's statement

"Society’s relationship with technology is the primary concept being addressed in my work. The use of technology and our necessary, but potentially dangerous relationship to it is the focus of my sculptural practice. Within this, a duality of processes has arisen, one that contrasts fabricated with found objects; by applying these two modes of production to my pieces the complicated relationship between society and technology is referenced and further examined."
