Al Dounouk arrived in Bermuda just before Hurricane Fabian in 2003.  While he had his eyes on some of Bermuda’s beauty spots that he thought would make ideal subjects for his photographs, many of these literally disappeared overnight.  Included in this disappearance was a large portion of his newfound home in St. David’s.  Undaunted by nature’s interruption, Al quickly found his ‘creative feet’ and enjoys seeking out the lesser known aspects of the island which he finds particularly appealing.

His training as a US Navy photographer, coupled with the experience he gained photographing from the flight deck of an aircraft carrier, has given him a keen eye that allows him to see a shot in the making. His cloudscapes are a testimony to his ability to anticipate the evolving drama and beauty of the Bermuda skies. Equally comfortable shooting less fleeting subjects, Al has found a new angle on the Island’s much-photographed architecture and also enjoys ‘working the street' - locals are rarely shy or withdrawn and thus make appealing subjects for his candid photographs.

Artist's statement

"Until recently my interest has been solely in photography. Having been introduced to non toxic Intaglio printing, a new way of expressing myself has been opened up.  This will strongly lead to a new way in the development and growth of my art."
