Daniel DeSilva studied illustration and design at the Ontario College of Art, and then went to the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design to study Fine Art and Art Education. As Head of Creative Arts, he teaches fine art at Bermuda High School. He says: “I am inspired by the sights of Bermuda; the glances at the island around me are what drive me to produce my work. A brief glimpse of a building or local flora is full of interest and information for me. The strong elements of design found within the sights of Bermuda encourage one to take a longer look. In my work, line and colour are brought together in a form of design that relates directly to the observation of reality. It is a form I have called design realism. I think of my images as a visual vocabulary that Bermudians use. It is the imagery that we as a people are familiar with, the brightness of sunlight, the effect of light on a plant or building. Sometimes we have to turn our eyes away because reflected sunlight is so bright on a rooftop, or on the side of a building. If you live in Bermuda, you can’t avoid being familiar with these images. While it is our visual vocabulary, we tend to take it for granted.”
